Pool rules and safety

Water safety is important to us - to keep everyone safe and healthy at the pools please ensure the following:

  • Children under 4

Are required to wear a swim nappy in the pool.

  • Children under 5

Must be actively supervised by an adult supervisor with a minimum ratio of one adult to three children.*

  • Children aged 5-7

Must be actively supervised by an adult supervisor with a minimum ratio of one adult to four children.*

  • Children aged 8-12 inclusive

If visiting any Kāpiti Coast District Council aquatics facilities unsupervised must give reception emergency contact details (first and last name and contact phone number) of a parent or guardian. Pool staff will act on any reasonable concerns about the care or safety of unaccompanied children in the pool, but will not assume responsibility for the care of those children. Emergency contact details will be held in confidence at reception and securely disposed of at the end of each day. For groups - at least one emergency contact must be given.

  • For groups with a mix of ages

If you have a mix of ages in your group, children under 5 must be actively supervised by an adult supervisor with a minimum ratio of one adult to one under 5, plus no more than three 5-7 year olds.

*Adult supervisor is a person 16 years or over. Actively supervising means within arm's reach and able to provide immediate assistance

Coastlands Aquatic Centre Swim Test

To ensure everyone who visits Coastlands Aquatic Centre has fun in a safe environment, all children aged 8 to 12 years who wish to swim in the deep water (2.4 metres) must pass a swim test.

The test will be:

  • jump in
  • tread water for 1 minute
  • swim forward 25 metres without stopping
  • climb out.

Treading water means being able to support yourself easily in an upright position in the water. Then swim forward confidently, without pushing off the pool floor.

See reception about taking the test.
